Toren Trophy International youth football tournament

Toren Trophy International youth football tournament

3. Ascension, 30 May - 31 May 2014
Steenwijk, Netherlands

This international youth football tournament in Steenwijk the Netherlands is not only known for its football, but also for its nice location.

If the expression “Nederland Waterland” (“Netherlands Waterland”) is apt anywhere, it is in Steenwijk. This small town lies surrounded by lakes, canals and the Weerribben National Park, but is also next to the historical port town of Blokzijl and the tourist favourite Giethoorn. Right by the sports pitches, the De Meenthe multi-purpose theatre serves as a venue for participants and spectators as well as the location for the closing ceremonies. And in the tropical wave pool across the street, participants can enjoy some disco swimming. In other words, the Toren Trophy has all the ingredients for a successful international youth football tournament.

Organisation

v.v. d'Olde Veste '54

The Toren Trophy tournament is organised by VV d’Olde Veste ’54. The club was established in 1954. Today, the club has more than 850 members, divided over more than 50 teams, making it the biggest club in the north of the Province of Overijssel. V.V. d’Olde Veste ’54 is dynamic and ambitious and pays therefore much attention to youth. The fact that the club won the Rinus Michels Award for the best youth development programme of 2007/2008 is the best proof of this.

Touristic information

Steenwijk

Steenwijk (17.000 inhabitants) is a small town in the province of Overijssel, in the north eastern part of the Netherlands. Originally Steenwijk is an old fortified town with canals and city walls dating back to approximately 1800. The town has city rights since 1250 and today has a regional function.

Steenwijk is situated in rural surroundings where water and nature are the main ingredients. The wetlands at the national parks De Weerribben, De Wieden and De Olde Maten are rare in Europe. The best way to see this area is from the water. A trip on a boat is a possibility but it is also possible to rent a canoe.

Giethoorn

When visiting Giethoorn, you’ll soon discover why this village is nicknamed ‘Venice of the North’. The village is the result of peat cutting. Lakes arose because of the digging of peat ponds and canals were dug for transport. Houses were built on little islands, connected by bridges that are characteristic of Giethoorn. Transport takes place by water in so called ‘punters’. These small boats can be hired so that tourists can get to know Giethoorn from the water.

Subtropical swimming pool

Sport- en recreatiebad De Waterwijck is the largest swimming pool in the region. The subtropical swimming pool offers many attractions like wild water and a 45 metre slide.
