KASTELA–SPLIT WINE TOUR (the birthplace of Zinfandel)

ZinfandelWidely considered an American (California) original, Zinfandel has become the quintessential Thanksgiving day libation. However, a series of events in recent years have shed new light on true origins of Zinfandel. Team of enthusiasts led by the internationally famous Croatian –born Californian winemaker Mike Grgich (Grgich Hills Winery) traced the origins of Zinfandel using DNA testing to a hillside overlooking the sea in a village of Kastela, just 20 km from Split. The original name for Zinfandel was and still is Crljenak Kastelanski (literally ´black grapes from Kastela´) and now it is experiencing a rebirth in Kastela and the surrounding area. Small family plots are becoming serious wineyards, improvised wineries are being upgraded with modern technology. We´ll take You to Putalj winery in Kastel Sucurac where our host Anton Kovac produces a fresh and lively Zinfandel which pairs with sheep´s milk cheese and Anton´s homemade olive oil. A real feast awaits at our next stop, the Bedalov winery, where the winemaker himself will cook a four course meal. Jaksa and his family have been producing wine for more than 700 years. We´ll also show You a ´Biblical Garden´ Stomorija, one of only 20 in the world. The short stroll through the garden will be refreshing and educational as You´ll learn about medicinal and aromatic herbs used in Dalmatian cuisine. A small 12 wine wineyard was planted in honor of the discovery about the Kastela origin of Zinfandel.

Price per person 160€ (2 people min.)

Price includes: welcome drink at the club in Split, visit to Putalj winery (few wines paired with local delicacies), visit to Bedalov winery (4 course meal prepared by the winery owner with paired wines) private sommelier guide, transport

HVAR ISLAND WINE TOUR (the evolution of Zinfandel)

Winemaking on Hvar has been around for more than 2000 years, brought here by the Greeks who established a colony named Pharos (now called Stari Grad, the oldest town in Croatia). On the heals of the discovery that the most widely planted grape varietal on Hvar island, Plavac Mali, is actually an offspring of a world famous Zinfandel grape (also traced back to Kastela just outside of Split, where it originated and is actually called Crljenak Kastelanski) international interest in Hvar wines has exploded. First stop is a small cellar just outside of Jelsa that belongs to the Dubokovic family. A flight of wines here leaves people speachless, from interesting and unusual whites, huge and powerful reds to sweet and special desert wines. Next we visit the most exquisite winemaker on Hvar, Andro Tomic. His state of the art winery and Greek inspired tasting room are a must see and the wine and delicacies pairing prepared by the winery staff is one of the most interesting experiences a true wine and food lover can have. After the wineries and pouring more than a dozen different wines in yourself, we´ll make sure you relax and savor the sounds and tastes of Hvar on a quiet terrace of Hotel Croatia, nestled between the sea and pine trees, where your personal guide on the tour will lead you through a wine paired three course dinner which will perfectly round out a day of island hedonism. When a tour is done by a private speed boat we can make a stop at Zlatan Plenkovic winery, another pearl with a unique underwater cellar in Sveta Nedilja on the southern slopes of island Hvar, the biggest winery on the island and one of the first big Croatian winemakers.

Price per person 175€ (2 people min.)

Price includes: tasting at Dubokovic winery (approx. 10 wines with local delicacies), tasting at Tomic winery (approx 5 wines paired with local delicacies), wine paired lunch, dinner at Hotel Croatia (three course meal with paired wines), private sommelier guide, transport on the island Hvar
